Somali Festival & Culture 2024 in Bristol

Celebrating Heritage and Education: Somali Festival & Culture 2024 in Bristol

Last weekend, Bristol’s vibrant Somali community and cultural enthusiasts gathered for the Somali Festival & Culture 2024, a highlight of the city’s annual Somali Week Festival. Organized by Bristol Somali Forum (BSF), this iconic celebration has grown into one of Bristol’s most anticipated cultural events since its inception in 2015. Supported by the National Lottery Community Fund, this year’s festival brought together local, national, and international Somali writers, educators, and artists at the Mirage Venue and City Academy, where the main day of festivities unfolded.

The event offered a dynamic space for Bristol’s Somali community to reconnect with their roots and celebrate their rich heritage. Attendees were treated to Somali artitacts exhibitions, poetry recitals, traditional music, and panel discussions led by prominent figures. For many, the festival was not only a chance to unite with friends and family but also an opportunity to engage with influential Somali thinkers and creators right in their own city.

This year’s festival centered on a pressing topic: “The Importance of Mother Tongue in Children’s Educational Performance.” Renowned educator, film-maker, poet and writer Said Salah headlined the discussions, emphasising the role of linguistic and cultural preservation in fostering academic success and identity pride. Other speakers including Bazi Buzuri  shared research, personal stories, and strategies to integrate Somali language and traditions into modern education systems.

Feedback from attendees and participants alike hailed the festival as “inspirational” and “transformative.” One community member remarked, “Seeing our culture celebrated so proudly in Bristol, and hearing experts like Said Salah speak about issues close to our hearts, fills me with hope for future generations.”

BSF’s dedication to curating fresh themes each year ensures the festival remains relevant and impactful. Past topics have included the identity, Somaliness, environment, youth empowerment, and women’s leadership.          The 2024 edition’s focus on education and language has sparked calls for ongoing workshops, which BSF aims to incorporate into future initiatives.

BSF extends heartfelt thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund, partners, attendees, and local MP Carla Denyer for making this year’s event a resounding success. As the festival continues to grow, it solidifies Bristol’s reputation as a hub for Somali cultural exchange and community pride.

Mark your calendars for Somali Week Festival 2025 (24 – 26 October 2025) where heritage, innovation, and unity will take center stage once again.
